The NYT Believe That Iraq Hasn't Changed

From the NYT, it would appear that they don't believe that much has changed in Iraq. Take this little gem(Emphasis mine):
Even before a smuggled cellphone camera recording revealed the derision Mr. Hussein faced on the gallows, the hanging had become a metaphor, among Mr. Maliki’s critics, for how the “new Iraq” is starting to resemble, albeit in paler shade, the repressive, vengeful place it was under Mr. Hussein.
So there you have it. We might as well just left Saddam in power. They continue:
The hanging spread wide dismay among the Americans.
Who are these Americans? They must mean the liberal left and the MSM. I for one was glad to see him go. In fact I haven't spoken with one person that hoped he would live, if only the evil imperialistic Americans would intervene.
